Synchronizing Body Clocks By now you might start to detect the flutters of your baby's movements, but you may be unaware that your little one is already developing patterns of activity and rest linked to your own sleep-wake cycle.

Feeling those first flutters of movementCONSTRUCTION ZONE When discussing individual pregnancy development stages and prenatal development we arrive at a stage of fetal development your little one's face is beginning to look more "human" as the mouth and nose take shape. Tooth enamel is forming, fingerprints are defined, and eye movements will begin at the end of this month of prenatal development. Your foetus weighs about 57 to 99 grams (two to three and a half ounces) and measures 10.15 to 15.30 centimetres (four to six inches).

HIS AND HERS Although the sex of your foetus was determined at conception, it is only during the second trimester that the baby's genitals become developed enough to visibly reveal gender. Amazingly, if you're carrying a girl, at this stage of fetal development her ovaries have already made millions of eggs! And, in the case of a little boy, the sperm-producing cells are now present in the testes.

WHAT'S HAPPENING Your baby is active in all sorts of ways - sucking his thumb, grabbing the umbilical cord and performing little acrobatics. By the 16th week of prenatal development, you may start to feel the tiny flutters of kicks and punches, or even share your baby’s hiccups! The pregnancy development stages start when you need to pay special attention after meals, and in the afternoons or evenings, when foetuses seem to be most active. It is often when you yourself are not moving about – when you’re sitting still, driving or putting your feet up for a rest – that the little one inside decides to get really energetic. Try pressing your hand lightly on the area where you’ve just felt a kick. Does your baby react by giving you another kick? Or perhaps even respond by changing position? The two of you are now really beginning to interact!

BEDFELLOWS Your baby's activity cycles are now somewhat linked to yours. Between 20 and 22 weeks of fetal development, the foetus becomes diurnal, meaning your little one’ waking and sleeping patterns are not the same during daytime and nighttime. Your own body clock is also adapting to your baby's: your sleep is gradually becoming lighter, and more broken up at night, and you're able to nap more easily during the day from these pregnancy development stages on.
