There is some great fun to be had with a big brush and bucket of water. This task is fun and lets your child know that participating in real work is important.

How to play

Find a brush, the kind you'd use to paint a house. Fill a bucket with water. Ask your child to 'paint' the side of the house, a fence or even the trunk of a tree.

Additional props your child might appreciate include a painter's hat, a roller and tray and a cart in which to transport their tools and supplies.

Tricks & advice

A warmer day is best for this one.

Learning & growing

Your child is becoming increasingly curious about the outside world and is beginning to ask lots of questions about how it all fits together. This activity helps them understand cause-and-effect relationships and is a valuable lesson in how the real world works.

What you'll need

House-painting brush
Plastic pail
Painter's cap
Paint roller
Tray
Cart (optional)
