DOs and DON'Ts - Your doctor and midwife will no doubt advise you that life can and should go on as normal while you are pregnant. If there is an activity you are not sure about, seek advice. But on the whole, there is little you can't do in your condition. One exception to the rule of pregnancy activity, however, concerns cats. Cats carry toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection that is present in their faeces. If contracted during pregnancy, there is a chance that the disease could be passed on to your baby. Therefore retain healthy pregnancy, pregnant women must not touch cat litter, and are advised against having contact with young kittens. So this is not the right time to get a new four-legged member of the family!Harmful bacteria, such as listeria and salmonella, can also be found in some foods such as raw or soft-boiled eggs, cold meats or unpasteurised dairy products. So avoid these while you are pregnant and make sure your meals are always well-cooked and heated until piping hot. Finally, keep in mind that bacteria is also present in soil, so you must wear gloves when your pregnancy activities include gardening or handling unwashed fruit and vegetables. Other than these few precautions, then, it's life as usual if it is a healthy pregnancy - though you now have the perfect excuse to get out of weeding the garden!
